Well here we are, one year as Mr & Mrs and I can honestly say I am still just as happy as I was at this time last year [maybe even a little bit more!]. I wont lie, I don’t feel I am the most eloquent writer, in fact I often times struggle to articulate my feelings properly, so this wasn’t an easy post for me. It’s also hard to put our first year of marriage into words – especially when it feels like it literally just happened yesterday. But after a few days of writers block, a bottle [or two] of wine, and many many tears, I was able to finally finish just in time for our first anniversary. And as promised, I am attaching our full wedding video below for you all to watch until your hearts content!

So what’s it like being married? It’s funny how literally days after you say I do people start constantly asking you “how’s married life”, and truthfully life doesn’t really change that much. But here are a few things I discovered as we entered newlywed status.

the post-wedding depression
Yup, it’s a real thing. There is all this hype leading up to your wedding day. All of these events, with the people you love most, centered around you. Your wedding day comes and it is pure magic and you are left with this high you can’t really explain. And then it’s just over. People stop texting you, you don’t really have any big events to plan or look forward to. So how do you get through this depression period? For us it really helped that we went away on a honeymoon right after, we had time to unwind together and reflect on the amazingness that had just happened. And then getting our video and photos a few months later were such special moments that we got to share again with our family & friends.
real life moments
Life isn’t perfect, and no relationship is truly perfect either. Just because you get married doesn’t mean you’re all of a sudden in love every second of every day. It’s hard work, and you have to respect and understand one another in order to work together to build a life that works for both of you. Giving yourself a little time alone, or a night out with just your friends, those moments are just as important as the nights together. So even though we are pretty darn happy and those googly eyes you see all over Instagram are real life, so are the moments behind the scenes where we argue over the dishes or have silent fights that sometimes have us going to bed angry. The sooner you realize that not every day is going to be as perfect and lovey-dovey as your wedding day, the happier you will be all around.
we still have firsts
This is something that still makes my heart skip a beat. I love that I am still able to learn new things about my husband. I love that we are still able to be spontaneous and do something we have never done before to keep that spark alive.
the #relationshipgoals pressure
I totally felt like there was this pressure to pull off the best anniversary celebration out there. But you want to know what we actually did today? We had brunch at our wedding venue, we visited friends, we put on our wedding clothes and had Snowy River Images snap some adorable pictures of us. We made tomato & grilled cheese croissants – the first meal we ever had in this house together was grilled cheese and tomato soup, and it has kind of become a staple throughout the biggest milestones in our lives, although we had no bread and no tomato soup so I had to improvise a little. And tonight we’ve made reservations to snuggle on the couch with our pup watching all of our favourite shows that are currently sitting in our DVR. I was so worried that we had to do something monumental to celebrate, but when I really stopped to think about what we wanted to do it was simple: we just wanted to spend time with each other. It didn’t matter what we were doing as long as we were together.
So are we really in a different place than we were before we got married? No. The only thing that has changed is we have these memories from this incredible day with our friends and family, we have memories from this last year together, and we are both so excited to create more memories in this next year to come.
